Rule-breakers rule!
Here's someone who has a similar attitude to mine about public speaking rules.
Rules are made to be broken, but be sure to know why you're breaking the rule in the first place.
It's a good idea to know what the rules are, so that you can make a conscious decision to follow them or not, based on what's working for you and what you're trying to convey to your audience.
The more experience you have as a speaker with different audiences, topics, and venues, and the more confidence you gain, the more comfortable you will be with rule-breaking.
Darren Fleming turns his back on the audience to make a point, and is very funny in the process.
