Be original

Two things you'll never hear me say in a presentation:

1. Public speaking is the number one fear of Americans, outranking even death.

2. Jerry Seinfeld once referred to this statistic in his standup routine, saying, "According to most studies, people's number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. Death is number two. Does that sound right? This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you're better off in the casket than doing the eulogy."

Why won't I mention these two things in a presentation? Because hundreds of people in hundreds of presentations, books, e-books, reports, and various and sundry documents have already said them.

Repeating trite statistics and quotations will not make you stand out as a speaker. Be original and come up with your own way of expressing yourself and your message.
