A lectern is not a podium

I've been meaning to write about this for some time, but while I've been working my way down the list, Mary Jo Manzanares beat me to it! Check out her blog post about the difference between a lectern and a podium; here's a hint: that wooden thing you put your notes on and hide behind when you're feeling nervous - that's not a podium!

You may find in some dictionaries, but not all, "lectern" as one of the lesser definitions of podium. This is an example of how a word can be misused so often that it actually becomes an official part of our language in its incorrect form! But now that you know the difference, I hope you'll give the word "lectern" the respect it deserves.

Thanks to Ross Bowring for finding this great post.
